Dr. Betsy Goehrig has been serving as our Senior Minister since February 2009. She is a lifelong member of the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), having grown up in the First Christian Church of Frankfort, Kentucky. She received her B.A. from Eastern Kentucky University (’78), her M.Div. from Lexington Theological Seminary (’81), and her D.Min. from Columbia Theological Seminary (‘03). After her ordination in ’81, she served as Minister of Douglass Blvd. Christian Church in Louisville. She spent the next 23 years in Florida, as a new church Pastor, Hospice Chaplain, Director/Chaplain of a bereavement ministry in four counties, Associate Regional Minister for the Florida Region, and Senior Minister of First Christian Church, Tampa. She also served as a volunteer Police Chaplain for 15 years. She is excited about returning to her home state and university community.
Dr. Betsy’s family includes her husband, Kevin, and their four daughters: Christy (26, with her husband Jeff in Tallahassee), Brittany (20, in college in Tallahassee), Jamielee (13, Texas), and Kerri (10, Richmond) …plus their first grandbaby, Elizabeth, in Tallahassee! Betsy’s dad and other family reside in the Lexington/Frankfort area.
Dr. Betsy’s personal mission is "to be a strong Christian presence in the Church, the community, and the world, as a messenger of God's love, grace, compassion, and hope. I strongly believe this is also the church's calling, as we seek to live out the Great Commission and the greatest commandments.
Several commendations have been awarded Dr. Betsy for her community service, including: the Florida Achievement Award for meritorious citizens/role models, Florida State Senator Ken Pruitt's "Medallion of Excellence" award for community service; Port St. Lucie Citizen of the Year; Fraternal Order of Police Citizen of the Year; and DAR recognition for community service. She also grows and donates her hair to Locks of Love for children who have lost theirs, due to serious illness.
For fun, Betsy loves being outdoors and near water. She especially enjoys family walks with their three dogs.
